We can discuss a time which best suits your group. Booking essential
If you’re in a small group and want to experience the most highly rated of our Edinburgh tours, then we can offer you our two-hour Old Town of Edinburgh tour at a time that suits you for only £60.

We include a nod to popular culture!

We do love the past, it’s what Historic Edinburgh Tours is all about, but we also know that visitors to the city would like to experience a bit of Edinburgh’s popular culture. We’ll talk about Greyfriars Bobby and show you his statue. Greyfriars Bobby’s statue is the most photographed in Scotland! We’ll also talk about haggis, and yes, we WILL persuade you to try it! Your Edinburgh tour guide will also explain his kilt and ‘Highland’ outfit.

Edinburgh tour guide!

Our Old Town of Edinburgh walking tour is currently* rated on TripAdvisor as a five-star tour. This highly regarded walk covers over five hundred years of Edinburgh’s history and takes you in the footsteps of some of Scottish history’s most famous (and infamous) characters. We’ll take you to places which played a role in the lives of Mary Queen of Scots, the playboy criminal Deacon William Brodie, Bonnie Prince Charlie, our ‘ploughman poet’ Robert Burns and the Irish murderers Burke and Hare. (*True on 5 September 2019)

A picture tells a thousand words

Whilst we often get compliments about our story-telling ability, we’re aware that nothing brings the past to life like a well-chosen picture. We’ve cherry-picked the extensive Historic Edinburgh Tours archive for images which will show you ‘then and now’ comparisons. We like to think that after our tour, you’ll walk around Edinburgh and imagine it as it once was. We really like to think you’ll now have two Edinburghs to enjoy - the Edinburgh you can see around you today, and the one of the past which we recreated in your imagination.

Your comprehensive Old Edinburgh tour

Many Edinburgh tours focus solely on the Royal Mile; ours also takes you into not only Greyfriars Kirkyard but also the site of the former Blackfriars Friary and the place where the Church of St Mary in the Field once stood. The original religious buildings have long since disappeared, but we will reveal to you things that happened there that are truly fascinating. Each of these sites have stories are so interesting that they’ve appeared in Hollywood movies!

Your local Edinburgh tour guide

Your private Edinburgh tour will be led by Robert. He was born in Edinburgh, has always lived in Edinburgh, went to university on the Royal Mile and still teaches classes in a school close to the Old Town. You’re in very safe, local, knowledgable hands! Robert has researched, resourced and written every one of our tours and can answer your questions about Edinburgh’s fascinating history. He knows it’s secrets and loves sharing stories of his city!

The perfect family tour

Edinburgh has many dark and gory stories, perfect for adult groups wanting the ‘low-down’ on life in the Old Town. Children often also love these stories, but they need a very careful, age-appropriate telling. Robert, your Edinburgh guide, is a qualified educator with over twenty years of experience as a primary school teacher. He knows how to pitch stories to your family and can offer alternative tales for your family’s enjoyment. He’s very ‘in-tune’ with what you may, or may not, wish to discover on your Edinburgh tour!

“Do Not UNDERESTIMATE this FABULOUS tour!

A MUST DO for Edinburgh!

First of all regardless of what I write I will not be able to share how much my family enjoyed this tour. I truly wished I booked more time with Robert, he was the best! My family booked a private tour so our children would have time to focus and interact with Robert. We wanted them to learn about the unique history of Edinburgh and the entire experience was without parallel. Tour selection: There were several tours available, Robert was flexible and offered suggestions of what would fit our goals for the tour and keep our whole family engaged Safety/Security: Robert was perfect gentleman and while walking our family around Edinburgh he ensured our safety, he never crossed the road without waiting for signals or “rushed” through crowds, he placed my children’s safety first and it was noticeable (and greatly appreciated) Enthusiasm: Robert has a passion that is woven through his work, and both my family and I responded to his honest enthusiasm, I again cannot share how wonderful he is - he is the experience as much as the history he is sharing Details, Details, Details: from the visual aids to the LEGO men, Robert had it all! He had maps, activities, and museums to augment his stories, from the clues left by history we had a blast learning about Edinburgh Overall, I hung on every word Robert said. I will be contacting him again, he has been the best tour guide we have had in years.” Circlemajik TripAdvisor review - 31/5/2018
