On this Edinburgh walking tour, you'll walk in the footsteps of some of Edinburgh’s most iconic characters such as Bonnie Prince Charlie, Mary Queen of Scots, Deacon Brodie, Burke and Hare and Robert Burns. This isn’t just a Royal Mile tour, your local Edinburgh guide will show you other fascinating and historically significant parts of the Old Town.

Life and Death of an Edinburgh Playboy

William Brodie was a businessman and a deacon on the Town Council, but his love of the high life was his downfall. He might have been respectable by day, but by night he was a gambler, a womaniser and a thief. You’ll discover the Edinburgh he’d have known, from his childhood home to the scene of his death. We’ll share an eyewitness account of his last moments to help you ponder over one of the biggest Old Edinburgh mysteries, did Brodie cheat his execution? And we’ll tell you these stories at the site of the execution platform!

Your Old Edinburgh tour highlights

See Edinburgh as it once looked! There's something special about standing in a place where a King or a Queen once stood, and it's even more special to know what things happened there! Bringing the past to life is something we love doing. Bringing the past to life is something we excel at, and we get a lot of praise for it in our glowing Tripadvisor reviews. The stories we tell, the mental images we paint will, the archive pictures we use will let you see Edinburgh differently. Wouldn't it be exciting to walk about the Old Town after your tour and see the buildings and streets as they are now…but know what they once looked like and how Edinburgh used to be? This tour has been designed to help you imagine exactly that!

Explore parts of the city which visitors

often miss

We’ve designed this tour to take you to some ‘off-the- beaten-path’ places. This tour lets you experience a very different side of the Old Town. Keeping to the quieter areas also helps us deliver our tour more effectively. While we do visit the Royal Mile, we also visit some of Edinburgh’s historic places on the other side of the Cowgate Valley. You’ll hear stories which many other tours don’t cover.

Greyfriars Bobby - a world-famous story

Your tour starts in Greyfriars Kirkyard, next to the grave of one of Edinburgh’s most famous ‘characters’…the little Skye Terrier Greyfriars Bobby. We’ll look at his famous story and some not-so- famous alternative theories of the life of this iconic wee dog. Which story is the truest account of Bobby’s life? That’s for you to ponder!

Close encounters in Edinburgh

Our Edinburgh walking tour has to take you to the narrow alleyways which were the very veins of the Old Town, packed with people, businesses, and stories. We’ll explain the living conditions during the late eighteenth century, a time when Old Edinburgh was at it’s greatest. Our stories will make you realise not only what Edinburgh folk went through, but how they used it to create positive social conditions. By the end of our story, you’ll appreciate your home plumbing way more than you ever thought possible!

We adapt the route to suit

Edinburgh can sometimes be incredibly busy, especially the section of the Royal Mile between the Tron Kirk and the Lawnmarket. When the Edinburgh International Festival and Festival Fringe are on in August/September, we sometimes offer an alternative route down to the Canongate. This allows us to run a safer tour which keeps everyone together and incorporates just as many interesting and picturesque locations.
“Our tour with Robert was excellent, and we would highly recommend this informative and diverse tour. I thought I knew quite a bit of Scottish history, well now I know much more. The tour was fun, respectful, and very engaging, you should make time for this one.” Shannon B TripAdvisor review - 2/5/2019
“This was an excellent tour, especially due to the knowledge and presentation skills our our Tour guide, Robert. He has clearly spent a lot of time researching the many fascinating subjects that lie within this site. He approaches the tour with humor and enthusiasm while maintaining a proper degree of reverence for the location (this is a real graveyard, after all). My wife and I spent a week touring sites across the UK and Ireland, and I have been telling my friends and family that this tour was one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you!” Matthem C TripAdvisor review - 5/8/2018
“This tour was arranged for us by a friend and I would have to say it was the best small group tour we did in Scotland. Robert is very knowledgable and gave a very in depth tour of the history surrounding Greyfriars, at the same time making it interesting and enjoyable without the usual boring overload of facts that you tend to get on some Historic Tours. We have suggested our friend put this on her list of must do tours for all her aussie visitors.” Clair V TripAdvisor review - 31/8/2018
