Greyfriars Kirk Tombs in the Kirkyard Greyfriars Kirkyard tour
The Greyfriars Kirkyard tour (’Kirkyard' is Scottish for ‘churchyard’) will reveal to you the stories of some of Scottish history’s most fascinating and significant characters. That’s something very special. The body snatchers who almost certainly skulked around Greyfriars were also known as ‘Resurrection Men’ because they were known to resurrect the bodies of the dead. We won’t attempt that on your tour, but we will resurrect their stories instead. We will vividly bring their stories back to life just for you. We’ll interweave their tales with the city in which they lived making this tour not just a tour of Greyfriars Kirkyard, but an exploration of what life was like in Old Edinburgh itself. Discover their experiences from Scottish history as we resurrect them in our own exciting ways!
“I want to see Edinburgh…why would I want to visit an old graveyard?!?” We haven’t yet heard a question like this from any of our guests, but sometimes we wonder if such a question does cross other people’s minds!  On the surface, one might agree with them. Edinburgh’s a wonderful place to explore so why waste some of your precious holiday time wandering around an old graveyard? Our answer to such a question is simple - “Because it IS an old graveyard!”. Greyfriars Kirkyard is the last resting place of some of the most famous, significant, interesting and infamous people from Scottish history. We’re not just talking Edinburgh’s history here. One man, for instance, you will meet on this tour was almost as powerful as a king and effectively ruled Scotland at one point! Our Greyfriars walk isn’t so much a story of tombs and monuments; rather it’s a story of the lives (and deaths) of people who lived in Old Edinburgh. And their story is Edinburgh’s story. Come with us and learn about their life and times on our Greyfriars history tour.
This isn’t a ghost tour… Whether you believe in ghosts or not, there is certainly something scary about Greyfriars. Charming in summer, vibrant with colours in autumn and spring, and atmospheric in winter, Greyfriars is always visually appealing! However at night, in the dark, it really is  something special. A historical tour of the Kirkyard would definitely be missing something if we didn’t look at the ghostly side of Greyfriars. On our tour, we deftly combine history and the paranormal with the tales we tell.  We’ll let you find out everything about Sir George ‘Bluidy’ Mackenzie, and you’ll get a chance to experience what his desire for torture looked and felt like (no, really, you will!), and you’ll also find out just how the Covenanters suffered during the “Killing times”. Oh, we’ve even got a historic ghost story about the Mackenzie tomb!
We will resurrect the lives of the following fascinating characters exclusively for you - The notorious Lord Advocate Sir George ‘Bluidy’ Mackenzie The Covenanters George Heriot, father of school founder George Heriot Regent of Scotland James Douglas, Earl of Morton Caricaturist John Kay - his images reveal the more eccentric  side of enlightenment Edinburgh Lynched Town Guard officer Captain John Porteous …and many more historic Edinburgh characters! Most tours that you would come across here focus on Greyfriars Bobby and the ghostly side of the Kirkyard. Our tour though is strictly history, and we believe it’s better because of it! Come with us and experience one of the most comprehensive history tours of the burial ground available. While on our other Edinburgh history tours, we take our guests to the very places where some of Scotland’s most famous (and infamous) characters lived and walked, on this one though we’ll take you to where their bodies lie!
